Living near the Pacific Ocean and old cedar forests in coastal BC, I spend many hours wandering the trails and beaches absorbing the power and integrity of the natural world. Many years of work on conservation and park making in BC inform my experience. I hope to convey my love and respect for nature and the spiritual sustenance it provides me through my oil and water-colour landscapes.

I taught Art history and Cultural Anthropology for over 25 years at universities in both Canada and the USA. My work is also informed by my knowledge and understanding of traditional composition and approaches in painting from Asia. I sign my paintings with my Chinese name, Baolan, or Precious Orchid, given to me by my Chinese brush painting teacher many years ago. Although I use brilliant colour in most of my watercolours and cold wax/oil work, I attempt to incorporate elements of Asian ink painting style through suggestive moods and subtle tonal transitions.
