Kim La Fave tells stories through images. Whether it’s with a pencil, paint, iPad or computer, he creates the image of a story. One such story, Amos’s Sweater (by Janet Lunn) won the Governor Generals Award for Illustration, the Ruth Schwartz Children’s Book Award, and the Amelia Francis-Howard Gibbon Illustrators Award. He was also given the TD Canadian Children’s Literature Award for his work on Shin-chi’s Canoe (by Nicola I. Campbell).

Kim grew up on the north side of Vancouver. He studied illustration first at the Alberta College of Art, before spending some time in New York. He and his wife then moved to Toronto to start his career. While in Toronto, he illustrated his first book, The Mare’s Egg, for Camden House in 1981, and never looked back.

When not helping guide a story with his illustrations, Kim has also worked in advertising and editorial for clients such as, American Express, Bacardi, and Bell Mobility to name a few. He’s been honored with many design awards from the Vancouver Art Director’s Club and the Advertising & Design Club of Canada, CA Magazine, and various other Marketing Awards.

Kim is now settled in Roberts Creek, BC with his wife and family, just a short sail to Downtown Vancouver.
