Born in Tokyo, educated in political science, economics and cultural geography in Japan and Canada, Hiroshi is Professor Emeritus, University of Lethbridge. During his 35-year tenure, he was visiting professor at academic institutions in the Americas, Asia and Europe, frequently using landscape sketching and schematic representation as tools for academic inquiry, analysis and communication. For him, landscape sketching elicits appreciation of natural processes, reflection on the historical past, awareness of the potentiality of human action embodied in each place. Over the years he has developed many of these sketches into watercolour paintings. A member of Società delle Belle Arti di Firenze, Italy and Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour, his paintings have been exhibited in a dozen countries.
