Greta grew up and completed her Fine Arts degree in South Africa. She moved in 1980 to the Sunshine Coast of B.C. where she has since worked from her studio as an illustrator and painter.
“Having lived on the west coast for 30 years I feel an integration with it’s character, and this has become the vehicle for my artistic expression. I believe that through the familiar sketches of life I create a bond with the viewers which allows me to converse with them on an aesthetic level. I paint in a way to express my involvement with the subject: I simplify and distort the forms, enhance the expressive value of colour, and create a rhythm that animates the scene. In this way I develop a visual language that conveys my sense of wonder and materializes the spirit of joy I feel.”

Jan Poynter is a professional artist, illustrator and instructor from the Sunshine Coast in British Columbia, Canada. Jan’s outstanding conceptual rendering abilities have contributed to her fine art and commercial career with expertise in watercolor and acrylic painting, pastel, and traditional scratchboard. With over 30 years teaching experience Jan shares with her students all her knowledge and energetic joy in creative expression.
Jan Poynter majored in Painting and Printmaking at the Vancouver School of Art and continued in Art Education at the University of British Columbia. Professional artist & illustrator Jan’s work has been used for corporate, advertising, publishing, giftware and commissioned projects.
Jan work has exhibited in galleries since 1979 and been purchased for international, corporate & private collections. Her representational subjects range from floral & interior composition, to urban landscape & figurative studies. Jan works expertly in Watercolor, Acrylic, Oil & Pastel, is a printmaker, plein air and digital artist. From her home studio/gallery in Granthams Landing Jan teaches fine art programs for Capilano Uni – Cont Ed and offers classes, workshops, art retreats and a plein air festival.

“The beauty of the landscape talks to me…it is the starting point of my conversation with nature as I experience it, living life on the Pacific West Coast.
My conversation is defined by three elements, which stand out for me in a very prominent way. Overlooking the ocean on a daily basis, expanse definitely is one of those elements hard to deny. The second prominent element is light, which to me is mesmerizing. It leaves a signature on whatever is present. It defines the moment as is. Last, but not least, the different textures as they play with my senses. The bark of a tree, the softness of the mosses, the sand on the beach, the smoothness of a reflection in the water….
My goal is to capture the beauty, the moment and the feeling the landscape shares with me, so I can share that experience with others. Painting for me on one hand is like a merger with nature; on the other hand there is this awareness of shaping the image.”
